Context & problem

As the UI/UX designer and front-end developer, I led the redesign of the Gender Violence Database’s interface and visual identity. The database is a public research resource on gender-based violence, but its existing structure made the collection difficult to navigate, browse, and search.

I designed and built the new interface in HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript, then collaborated with engineers to integrate it into the existing Vue codebase for launch. The redesign focused on two core problems:

  • Research was difficult to discover

The database contained extensive scholarship, but its hierarchy, navigation, and search experience did not clearly expose how the collection was organized. Users often needed to already know what they were looking for, limiting browsing and discovery.

  • The visual system lacked clarity

Weak hierarchy and limited visual distinction made dense pages difficult to scan and created inconsistencies across views. The redesign needed a clearer system that could organize complex research while maintaining the credibility of an academic resource.
